제1장 군주국의 종류와 획득 방식
지금까지 인간을 지배해 왔고 현재도 지배하고 있는 모든 국가와 모든 지배권은 공화국이거나 군주국이었다.
군주국은 오랫동안 같은 가문이 통치해 온 세습 군주국이거나 새로운 군주국이다.
새로운 군주국은 프란체스코 스포르차에게 밀라노가 그랬던 것처럼 완전히 새롭게 세워진 것일 수도 있고, 스페인 왕이 차지한 나폴리 왕국처럼 그것을 획득한 군주의 세습 국가에 새로 편입된 일부일 수도 있다.
이렇게 획득된 영토는 군주의 지배 아래 사는 데 익숙한 곳일 수도 있고, 자유롭게 사는 데 익숙한 곳일 수도 있다. 또한 군주 자신의 무력으로 획득되기도 하고 다른 사람의 무력으로 획득되기도 하며, 행운에 의해서나 자신의 역량에 의해서 획득되기도 한다.
